Trump Rejects Idea of Running for Vice President in 2028 to Bypass Term Limits | “It Wouldn’t Be Right,” Says Ex-President

Former U.S. President Donald Trump says he won’t run for vice president in 2028, rejecting suggestions from supporters that he could use the role to return to power after his second term. “I wouldn’t do it… it wouldn’t be right,” Trump said aboard Air Force One, dismissing talk of skirting constitutional limits.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected suggestions that he could seek the vice presidency in 2028 as a way to remain in power beyond the two-term constitutional limit.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump confirmed that while he might technically be eligible to run for vice president, he would not pursue such a strategy.

Asked whether he would consider a vice-presidential run in the 2028 U.S. election, Trump said, “I would be allowed to do that. But I wouldn’t do it… I think it’s too cute. It wouldn’t be right.”

The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment restricts presidents to two terms in office. Trump, who began his second term in January, has often joked about extending his time in the White House, a sentiment echoed by some of his most ardent supporters.

The 79-year-old Republican has even displayed “Trump 2028” campaign hats in the Oval Office, fueling speculation about his political future.

Some of Trump’s allies have floated the idea that Vice President JD Vance could run for president in 2028 with Trump as his running mate — and, if elected, step aside to allow Trump to return to the presidency.

The theory gained further traction when Trump’s former strategist, Steve Bannon, hinted that such a plan might exist.

“There is a plan,” Bannon told The Economist. “He is going to get a third term… Trump is going to be president in ’28. And people just ought to get accommodated with that.”

When pressed about the 22nd Amendment, Bannon claimed, “There’s many different alternatives. At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is.”

Despite the speculation, Trump’s latest comments appear to rule out any attempt to circumvent constitutional term limits. “It wouldn’t be right,” he said, signaling that he has no intention of testing the constitutional boundaries to stay in power.
