Trump Threatens 25% Tariff on Countries Trading With Iran
US President Donald Trump says countries trading with Iran will face a 25% US tariff, escalating pressure on Tehran amid protests and rising tensions.
US President Donald Trump on Monday unveiled a sweeping new trade measure, announcing a 25 percent tariff on any country that does business with Iran, as Washington intensifies pressure on Tehran over its violent response to ongoing protests.
“Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This Order is final and conclusive,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
According to data from economic database Trading Economics, Iran’s key trading partners include China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.
The tariff announcement comes as Trump considers potential military responses to the situation in Iran, where rights groups say the death toll from the crackdown on protesters is continuing to rise.
“Air strikes would be one of the many, many options that are on the table,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said earlier on Monday.
She added, however, that Iran still has a diplomatic channel open through Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, noting that Tehran has adopted a “far different tone” in private discussions compared to its public rhetoric.
