Trump Warns of Possible Military Action Against Nigeria Over Killings of Christians
Former U.S. President Donald Trump warns of possible military intervention and suspension of aid to Nigeria if attacks on Christians persist, following America’s decision to place the country on a religious freedom watch list.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may take drastic measures against Nigeria if attacks on Christians in the country continue. In a post on his social media page on Friday, Trump said the U.S. could halt all aid and even use military force to eliminate those he described as “Islamic Terrorists” responsible for the killings.
In full, his post read:
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
The statement followed the U.S. decision this week to place Nigeria on a watch list as a “country of particular concern” for religious freedom, a designation tied to concerns about large-scale violations of religious rights. The dramatic language of Trump’s post raised fresh tensions as international and domestic debates continue over the drivers of violence in Nigeria and the appropriate global response.
