Turkey, Saudi Arabia and several other Muslim-majority countries have announced their acceptance of an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to join the so-called Gaza Board of Peace.

In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Turkey and Saudi Arabia, alongside those of Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, said their countries had agreed to participate in the initiative. The United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Pakistan had earlier confirmed their participation separately.

The ministers reaffirmed “their countries’ commitment to supporting the implementation of the mission of the Board of Peace as a transitional administration in the Gaza Strip.”

“The mission is set out in the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict and it is endorsed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803,” the statement added.

In total, 60 countries have received invitations to join the Board of Peace, which forms part of the second phase of Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, an area largely devastated by the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Some European countries, including Germany and France, have so far responded cautiously to the initiative.

Diplomats familiar with the board’s charter said it represents an open challenge to the United Nations, an institution Trump has repeatedly criticized as dysfunctional.

There are also indications that the U.S. government is considering expanding the board’s mandate beyond Gaza to address global crises and conflicts worldwide.
