UDUS Millennium Fellow Conducts Training for Campus Journalists -By Abdul-Afeez Olayinka

A Member of Millennium Fellowship Class of 2022 and 200-level law student at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Shereefdeen Ahmad has Thursday, 27th October organized a virtual training session for campus Journalists.

The session, themed ” The Role of Campus Journalists in Curbing the Menace of Corruption in Nigeria” was facilitated by Mr. Taoheed Adegbite, a practicing freelance journalist and Youth Advisor with the European Union in Nigeria.

Aimed at further enlightening the student-Journalists on their role in holding the public officers accountable, the training was part of the social impact activities of Shereefdeen Ahmad who is working on the project “The Role Media in Fighting Corruption”_ a topic in line with actualizing Sustainable Development Goal, SDG16 which seeks to eliminate all forms of corruption.

It’s no longer gainsaying that the level at which corruption is growing in Nigeria has reached a stratospheric proportion. Even despite the measures put in place by the government to combat the act, the West-African country is currently ranked 154 least corrupt nations out of 180 countries, according to Corruption Perceptions Index(CPI).

In an interview with the host, Shereefdeen Ahmad said the idea was born out of his zeal for making social impacts.

“I joined the Millennium Fellowship following my passion for making social impacts,”he said.

“It was an interesting virtual session,” he said. “I really learnt a lot about the roles of Campus Journalists in the battle with the growing corruption in Nigeria.”

“I can now understand what investigative journalism is all about, and how to go about it.” He added.

The Millennium Fellowship is a semester-long leadership development program for undergraduate students to improve partnership building and community impact skills in line with making the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and principles reality by 2030.
