UK to Skip Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ Signing Ceremony, Citing Concerns Over Putin’s Involvement
Britain will skip the signing of U.S. President Donald Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ in Davos, citing concerns over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s participation amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Britain will not participate in Thursday’s signing ceremony for U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” in Davos, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed.
Trump is set to host the event for the founding charter of his international conflict-resolution body, which carries a $1 billion fee for permanent membership.
“There’s a huge amount of work to do, we won’t be one of the signatories today,” Cooper told BBC from Davos, citing UK concerns over the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose forces continue fighting in Ukraine after the 2022 invasion.
“Because this is about a legal treaty that raises much broader issues, and we do also have concerns about President Putin being part of something which is talking about peace, when we have still not seen any signs from Putin that there will be a commitment to peace in Ukraine,” she added.
Invitations were previously extended to dozens of world leaders for the so-far vaguely defined board. While originally intended to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction, the board’s charter appears to extend beyond the Strip and could challenge the role of the United Nations, drawing criticism from U.S. allies, including France.
Trump said on Wednesday that Putin had agreed to join, despite the Kremlin stating that it is still reviewing the invitation.
