When the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) set the general cutoff mark at 140 this year 2024 JAMB , one of my students asked me a pertinent question: “Is 140 the cutoff mark for all universities?” This question prompted me to clarify a few things for everyone.

Firstly, the 140 mark set by JAMB is merely a benchmark. It does not mean that every university in Nigeria will adopt 140 as their cutoff mark. Each university retains the autonomy to set its own cutoff, often much higher than the JAMB benchmark. For instance, the University of Ilorin, which saw 64,143 applicants this year, is unlikely to set their cutoff at 140.

For prospective students, it is crucial to research thoroughly. Consult the brochures of various universities and understand their specific requirements. This will help you identify which institutions you can realistically apply to with your JAMB score.

Navigating the admissions process requires careful planning and a clear understanding of each university’s criteria. This preparation will increase your chances of gaining admissions into your desired program and institution.
