UNILAG to Award Certificates in Entrepreneurial Studies to All Graduates — Prof. Ogunsola
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, says the university will train all students in entrepreneurial studies and issue certificates upon graduation to promote job creation and innovation.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced plans to train all its students in Entrepreneurial Studies and award them certificates in the discipline upon graduation — a move aimed at equipping graduates with job-creation and self-reliance skills.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, made this known during the Entrepreneurial Hangout (1.0) themed “Fostering an Entrepreneurial Mindset in the University Ecosystem.”
Ogunsola, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Muyiwa Falaye, said the university is introducing the initiative to prepare students not just for employment but to become creators of opportunities.
“In the next one year or so, students who graduate here will also receive certificates in Entrepreneurial Studies,” she said. “This is innovative and the first of its kind among Nigerian universities. We want our graduates to become job creators — people who can make a difference without depending solely on employment.”
The convener and lead speaker, Prof. Olufemi Olayemi, who holds the Dr. Mike Adenuga (Jnr.) Professorial Chair in Entrepreneurship Studies, described an entrepreneurial mindset as a “cognitive orientation that enables individuals to identify opportunities, take calculated risks, and persist through challenges to create value.”
According to Olayemi, developing such a mindset within universities requires intentional education, mentorship, and an enabling institutional culture.
“Entrepreneurship education encourages experiential learning through simulations, case studies, start-up projects, and interdisciplinary collaboration,” he explained. “By introducing students to entrepreneurial thinking early, universities build confidence, creativity, and resilience — qualities vital in today’s economy.”
He further emphasized that fostering a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem requires a systemic approach, involving curriculum innovation, supportive infrastructure, and leadership commitment. Olayemi also identified agropreneurship as a vital driver of national development and urged universities to promote innovation-based solutions across all disciplines.
On his part, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN), Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dr. Mike Adenuga (Jnr.) Professorial Chair, advised young Nigerians to stay focused and strategic in pursuing their goals.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Osipitan said. “Young people must identify mentors who can add value to their journey. Patience, perseverance, and collaboration are essential ingredients for success.”
Through this initiative, UNILAG seeks to strengthen its position as a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship, ensuring that every graduate leaves the university not only with a degree but also with the skills and mindset to drive economic growth.
