US Airstrikes: Ondo Amotekun Arrests 39 Suspected Terrorists Fleeing Sokoto
Ondo Amotekun has arrested 39 suspected terrorists who allegedly fled Sokoto after US Christmas Day airstrikes in Nigeria’s North-West, as the outfit parades 100 suspects across the state.
The Ondo State security outfit, Amotekun, has arrested 39 suspected terrorists who allegedly fled Sokoto State following Christmas Day airstrikes carried out by the United States military in Nigeria’s North-West.
The State Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this while parading 100 suspected criminals arrested across the state. He said the 39 suspects claimed they escaped from Sokoto and relocated to forest areas in Ondo State.
According to Adeleye, the suspects said they were forced to flee due to intensified security pressure in the northern part of the country.
“A couple of days ago, 39 suspects were arrested, all together, claiming that as a result of the heat turned on them in the northern part of the country, they are relocating into the forest,” Adeleye said.
“We are still profiling them, and after the profiling, we may have to send them back, but those found with incriminating equipment and materials will surely be prosecuted.
“The government has made its position known. For you to stay in our forest areas, you must obtain permits. So, the sudden influx of this element poses a lot of questions that we are still working on. I have them equally arraigned,” he added.
Adeleye noted that collaboration between border patrol teams in Ekiti/Ondo, Osun/Ondo, and Ogun/Ondo has yielded significant results. He said some suspects were not paraded because investigations were ongoing, including cases that required operatives to travel to Ogun State to retrieve suspects.
Speaking on other arrests, the Amotekun commander said about 100 suspects were arrested statewide, with 61 paraded. Of these, 50 were arrested for breach of law and order, two for anti-open grazing violations, six for kidnapping-related offences, and three for gender-based abuse and rape.
He said the suspects’ ages range between 18 and 45 years.
On alleged rape cases, Adeleye said three suspects — Daniel Ojo (19), Usman (33), and Bejide (41) — were arrested in the Isinkan area of Akure, the state capital.
Adeleye expressed appreciation to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa “for giving us an enabling environment to thrive,” and also thanked other security agencies, including the police, civil defence, army, DSS, vigilantes, and members of the public for their support.
