Washington, D.C. / Abuja — A coalition of Igbo professionals and businessmen in the United States has voiced concern over the planned “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest slated for October 20, warning that it could disrupt the ongoing trial of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.

The protest, reportedly initiated by Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, has drawn recent support from former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

In a statement issued Tuesday under the banner “Njiko Amaka”, and signed by Chiefs Emeka Ejidike and Okey Anosike, the group expressed concern that the demonstration might be driven by political motives rather than genuine advocacy for justice.

“We are concerned that the timing of this protest may inadvertently affect the progress of Kanu’s trial,” the statement read. “Well-meaning Nigerians should carefully consider all factors before participating or lending support.”

The group urged supporters of the IPOB leader to pursue legal and constructive means to ensure a fair judicial process, stressing that several elected Igbo leaders — including governors and legislators — are actively engaged in addressing the issue through appropriate channels.

“We encourage all parties to prioritize the rule of law and avoid actions that could complicate the ongoing judicial process,” the statement added.
