The United States has lifted airspace restrictions over the Caribbean following a US military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The temporary ban had barred commercial flights during the mission.

Maduro and his wife were reportedly flown by helicopter to New York City, where they face charges related to drug trafficking and weapons. The couple was seized by US special forces in a pre-dawn operation, which included airstrikes targeting sites in and around Caracas late Saturday.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed on X that the initial restrictions expired at 12:00 a.m. (0500 GMT), allowing flights to resume as scheduled. “Airlines are informed, and will update their schedules quickly,” he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration had previously instructed commercial airlines to avoid Caribbean airspace, citing a “potentially hazardous situation” due to “safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing military activity.”
