Wayne Rooney has delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United’s struggles, saying the club has lost its soul and that he has “no faith” in manager Ruben Amorim’s ability to revive their fortunes.

Amorim has collected just 34 points from 33 Premier League games, and Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford means he is still without back-to-back league wins. United, who endured their worst top-flight season in 51 years by finishing 15th last term, remain stuck in 14th place despite a heavy summer outlay on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko.

Rooney, the club’s all-time top scorer, admitted he now attends games expecting United to lose.

“I just don’t know what’s going on,” the 39-year-old said on his BBC podcast. “Ruben Amorim is my age, he’s still a young manager with a big future, but what’s happening at Man Utd… this is not Man Utd. I honestly hope he can turn it around, but after everything I’ve seen, I’ve got no faith in it.”

The former captain, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson, said the players are failing to live up to the club’s standards.

“I don’t see players fighting, I don’t see character, I don’t see desire to win. I go to games expecting them to lose or maybe scrape a point. The soul has gone from the club. It needs a new engine, a new lease of life,” Rooney said.

He stressed that United’s problems go beyond Amorim: “This is not all on the manager. Players are not deserving to wear that shirt and it hurts.”

Rooney also raised concerns about the wider culture at Old Trafford. “The culture that defined Manchester United under Sir Alex has gone. I see staff losing jobs, people walking out. I’ve got two kids in the academy, and I hope this doesn’t affect them. But what I’m seeing right now is not Manchester United.”
