The Gbagada-Bariga drainage channel’s unlawful buildings, including all identified shanties, are being demolished by the Lagos State Government, starting yesterday.

This happened when the owners of illegal structures near local water canals received a 48-hour notice to vacate their structures from Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources.

Remember that last Wednesday’s severe downpour caused huge flooding along the Gbagada axis, causing tremendous hardship for both residents and drivers.

Wahab, using his official X account, claimed that the squatters’ threat was a significant contributing cause to the area’s recurring flooding.

He said: “Following the expiration of a removal notice to owners of shanties beside Bariga-Gbagada Drainage Channel, operatives of the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance department from Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources commenced the removal of all the shanties on the drainage setback to stem the incident of flooding.”
