An African proverb says the truth never hides, and neither do lies. With modern technologies, nothing can remain hidden under the earth. The two-day event organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation at Arewa House, Kaduna, revealed a realistic picture of truth, allowing people to choose between truth and deception.

Given the current state of the North, it’s challenging to convince people that the region is living comfortably, peacefully, and progressively. The high numbers of out-of-school children, unemployment, and terrorism indicate that the North is not ahead of any region in Nigeria. Insecurity, juvenile delinquency, and communal crises are plaguing the region, making it difficult to mask the harsh reality with figures and charts.

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Memorial Foundation provided a platform for the people of the North to reflect on their condition and chart a way forward. However, the Tinubu government has yet to fulfill its promises to the region. Insecurity and poverty are escalating, and the number of unemployed and out-of-school children has increased tenfold compared to the previous government.

The North is plagued by violence, kidnapping, and banditry, particularly in Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina states. The removal of fuel subsidies has exacerbated the hardship, and the government’s promise to fix the refineries remains unfulfilled.

Despite these challenges, the North remains a crucial player in Nigeria’s politics, contributing significantly to the country’s stability. Given its importance, the government of President Bola Ahmad Tinubu should prioritize fulfilling its promises to the region.

To address the region’s challenges, the government should implement empowerment programs to provide work opportunities for youths, ensure a constant power supply for businesses, and thwart terrorism and communal crises. Farmers should be motivated and empowered to feed the nation, and women and youths should be included in the government to promote inclusive governance.

By taking these steps, the government can help the North overcome its challenges and contribute to Nigeria’s overall development.
