Who Deserves Your Vote? Key Qualities to Consider and the Role of Religious Leaders -By Yasir Shehu Adam

A good leader’s impact is measured by their actions, not their rhetoric. In Bauchi State, for example, Senator Shehu Buba Umar of Bauchi South Senatorial District recently sponsored 200 students at Malikiya College of Health Sciences to study in the medical field. Similarly, before him, Air Marshal Sadiq Baba Abubakar, the APC gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections, awarded scholarships to Bauchi State students at the same institution. These are the kind of initiatives that contribute to human development and create a better future for the youth.

Nigeria is at a critical crossroads. Millions of citizens struggle daily to afford basic necessities—food, healthcare, and education—due to poor leadership and bad governance. Public schools are deteriorating, healthcare is out of reach for many, and students drop out because their families cannot afford tuition. Meanwhile, politicians remain focused on their personal ambitions rather than addressing these pressing issues.
As the next election approaches, Nigerians must choose wisely. The future of the country depends on electing capable, responsible, and selfless leaders.
Key Qualities to Consider in a Leader
1. Integrity and Honesty: A leader must be trustworthy, someone who keeps promises and does not deceive the people for political gain.
2. Competence and Experience: Past leadership performance is a strong indicator of future capability. Nigerians must evaluate candidates based on their achievements, not just their words.
3. Commitment to Public Welfare: Leaders should prioritize education, healthcare, and job creation over personal enrichment.
4. Vision and Practical Policies: A leader must have a clear plan to address poverty, insecurity, and infrastructure challenges with actionable solutions.
5. Courage and Strong Leadership: Nigeria needs leaders who can make tough but necessary decisions for national progress, rather than those who bow to corruption and political pressure.
The Role of Religious Leaders
Religious leaders, including Islamic scholars and Christian pastors, play a crucial role in guiding their followers toward making informed voting decisions. Unfortunately, some politicians exploit religious figures for political gain. However, true spiritual leaders must rise above this and educate their congregations on the qualities of a good leader.
Preaching Truth, Not Politics: Religious leaders should emphasize the importance of voting for competence rather than being swayed by money, ethnicity, or personal relationships.
Encouraging Political Awareness: Using their platforms, they should educate people on their voting power and the need for informed choices.
Promoting Peaceful Elections: They must foster unity, discourage political violence, and preach tolerance to ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process.
Real Leadership in Action
A good leader’s impact is measured by their actions, not their rhetoric. In Bauchi State, for example, Senator Shehu Buba Umar of Bauchi South Senatorial District recently sponsored 200 students at Malikiya College of Health Sciences to study in the medical field. Similarly, before him, Air Marshal Sadiq Baba Abubakar, the APC gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections, awarded scholarships to Bauchi State students at the same institution. These are the kind of initiatives that contribute to human development and create a better future for the youth.
Unfortunately, the current administration in Bauchi has neglected these crucial sectors. Education and healthcare continue to decline, making life harder for the average citizen. The state government must urgently rethink its approach and prioritize investment in these critical areas for a more prosperous society.
Your Vote is Your Power
As the election approaches, Nigerians must take their votes seriously. Do not be deceived by empty promises, party affiliations, or financial inducements. Instead, consider each candidate’s track record and their ability to lead effectively. A wrong vote will only worsen the suffering of the people.
This is a chance to correct past mistakes. Vote for integrity, competence, and commitment to public welfare. Avoid selling your vote for temporary gain. The future of Nigeria depends on the choices we make today. Choose wisely.
A Message to Religious Leaders
Guide your followers wisely. The responsibility to promote good governance is not only on politicians but also on those who influence the moral and ethical values of society. Nigeria needs leaders who will serve the people, not exploit them.
