“Haba, Kyari!” was the reaction of many yesterday after news filtered in that suspended top police officer, Abba Kyari, is a member of an international drug cartel. He was declared wanted, arrested and now detained in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Recall that Kyari was suspended by the police after United States’ FBI indicted him in the fraud case of a popular fraudster, Ramon Abbas, known as Hushpuppi. United State authorities said Kyari was a conspirator with Hushpuppi in a $1.1 million deal to defraud a Qatari businessman.

With the account provided by the NDLEA, it shows clearly that despite his suspension from police service August, 2021 and his likely extradition, as at January 2022 Kyari still wield a level of control over the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Force Intelligence Bureau of the Nigerian Police Force.

Kyari continuous control of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) despite his suspension is deeply scandalous and shameful. It truly exposed the rot in our system and the insincerity of the authorities to diligently investigate the allegations against him.

For me, Kyari remains a super cop regardless of his travails. He is a true picture of what the Nigerian Police is. Or, why would you think less of a man the National Assembly made a standing ovation for in celebration of his gallantry? A man that conveniently combines exceptional policing skills with tailoring and pharmaceuticals should not be ‘degraded’ all because of the accusations flying around.

For me, Kyari remains a super cop.

Kyari is a loyal servant of our evil system.

Yes, he is a celebrated version of a typical Nigerian Police Officer.

He is a super example of what the Nigerian Police Force is.

An excellent microcosm of the whole Force.
