US President Donald Trump lashed out at a female journalist on Thursday, calling her “stupid” during a press encounter at his Florida estate, continuing a pattern of derogatory remarks toward women in the media.

“Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person?” Trump asked, interrupting the reporter while answering questions about the vetting of Afghan nationals resettled in the United States.

The exchange came after two National Guard soldiers were shot near the White House on Wednesday, allegedly by an Afghan national brought into the country following the abrupt US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

The reporter questioned why Trump blamed his predecessor, Joe Biden, when some officials in his own administration had stated that resettled Afghans had been properly vetted.

“Because they let them in,” Trump replied, holding up a photo of a US military plane carrying people fleeing Afghanistan as the Taliban regained power.

“They came along with thousands of other people that shouldn’t be here, and you’re just asking questions because you’re a stupid person,” he added.

Trump’s sharp insults and confrontational style are well known, but he has repeatedly directed particularly harsh comments at women in the press.

On Wednesday, he criticized a New York Times article about his age and possible fatigue, calling the female author “ugly.” Earlier this month, he referred to another woman journalist as “piggy” and labeled a different reporter “a terrible person.”
