Zulum Of Niger: Bago’s 2025 Budget -By Fati Abdullahi Alkali
The proposed budget underscores the need for increased investment in human capital development. By prioritizing education and healthcare, Governor Bago demonstrates a proactive approach to tackling Nigeria’s developmental challenges. However, sustained transparency, regular public updates, and accountability will be critical to earning public trust and ensuring effective implementation.
I am writing to express my thoughts on the recent announcement that Governor Umaru Bago has approved a proposed budget of N1.20 trillion for the year 2025. This decision has sparked considerable interest and debate among Nigerians.
Governor Bago’s commitment to prioritizing education and healthcare, with nearly half of the budget allocated to these sectors, is commendable. These areas are fundamental to societal development, and this bold move reflects his dedication to addressing the pressing needs of the people.
However, the success of this budget lies in its implementation. To ensure the effective use of allocated funds, Governor Bago must establish mechanisms that promote transparency and accountability. Regular monitoring and evaluation will be critical to preventing corruption and mismanagement.
Inclusivity and equity are also essential. The budget must address the needs of all Nigerians, irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds. Investments in these sectors should focus on recruiting qualified personnel, providing adequate infrastructure, and delivering efficient services.
While many view the proposed budget as a visionary step, concerns have been raised about its feasibility and the challenges of implementation, including the need for significant resources, personnel, and infrastructure. To overcome these obstacles, Governor Bago must collaborate with stakeholders—civil society organizations, private sector players, and community leaders—to build partnerships and leverage resources effectively.
Furthermore, aligning the budget with Nigeria’s development goals, particularly the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is vital. This alignment will enhance the impact of investments in education and healthcare, contributing to long-term poverty reduction and inequality mitigation.
I encourage Governor Bago to focus on delivering tangible results through this budget. At the same time, Nigerians must actively support these efforts to ensure that our education and healthcare sectors are transformed for the benefit of all.
