Defending Ourselves Against Atrocities -By Jibrin Ibrahim

1. He tried to increase the price of petroleum products to 140 Naira but failed after a popular citizens’ resistance. He had to beg for “soft landing” and bribe labour to put the price at 97 Naira. But for labour’s sellout of civil society and the citizenry, not a kobo would have been added to the 65 Naira pump price.

2. He signed the National Minimum Wage bill into law just before the elections in 2011 but after he won, he showed his lack of integrity by attempting to refuse to pay the minimum wage. He was however resisted and forced by the people to honour the provisions of the law.

3. He tried to rename the University of Lagos, Moshood Abiola University and was told to open a university in Otueke and name it after Abiola if he loves him so much and dare not use Abiola’s name to score political points for himself. It was such a humiliating rejection by the popular will of the people.

4. His attempt to make Hon Mulikat Adeola as the Speaker of the House of Reps ended in humiliating defeat as opposition members teamed up to support Hon Aminu Tambuwal and saw to his emergence as the Speaker.

5. His plan to impeach Gov Rotimi Amaechi failed.

6. His plan to impeach Gov Tanko Almakura failed. Note that Gov Nyako’s impeachment succeeded because of his personal undoing which pitched him against every political interest in his state.

7. His plan to install Gov Jona Jang as Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) and scuttle Gov Rotimi Amaechi’s bid to lead the forum, failed! That led to the enactment of the infamous 16 is greater than 19 arithmetic.

8. His plan to impeach the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal failed. The coup he plotted to execute the removal was defeated by opposition Lawmakers who had to scale the fence of the National Assembly to storm the chambers and prevent a phantom sitting by PDP members.

9. His attempt to use the military and hooded DSS operatives + armed thugs to rig the Osun state elections failed. Note that the case of Ekiti was different because there was a disconnect between Gov Fayemi and his people.

10. He tried to use thugs, the police and the DSS to suppress the #BringBackOurGirls movement and force the world to tow his inhuman line of denying the abduction of the 219 girls of Chibok, but in his usual run of ill luck, the truth prevailed and he failed. The advocacy has since then continued and made sure that the world does not forget our beloved girls of Chibok. Even his politicisation of the issue has not deterred the campaigners.

11. His attempt to prevent the emergence of HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano ended in yet another resounding defeat.

12. His attempt to postpone the February 14 elections just failed. He tried to arm-twist the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega into postponing the poll, but the Professor of Political science refused to be intimidated. He called the council of state meeting, hoping to use them for the purpose but that move too ended an adventure in futility.

13. His hope to truncate the emergence of GMB as the people’s choice in the coming elections is also destined to fail by the grace of God.

If he were a wise man, he would have seen the clear signs that his time in Aso Rock is up and allowed for a free and fair election and afterwards, quietly surrendered the reins of power and returned to Otueke. But in his character of delusion, he will keep fighting a lost cause until he meets the ultimate humiliation. Nigeria has a divine mandate for her citizens, Africa and all of humanity and her time of emancipation has come. Of course the draconian system is behind his ferocious fight but it is all the death throws of a dying horse. Change is here and to God be the glory.
