Amotekun Ban: What South-West Governors Must Do -By Adetayo Omotoyosi Adeolu

The Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed ”Operation Amotekun” was recently proclaimed illegal by the federal government. This was after the governors in the region had equipped and launched the security outfit.

Truth be told, the present security agencies that we have in the country, such as the Nigerian Army, Police and others are overstretched and seems helpless confronting the very dangers that threaten the Yoruba region and by extension, Nigeria.

The South-West has always taken the lead when it comes to governance in Nigeria, that could be the reason why they created Amotekun.

This action alone has once again brought back the debate of why we need state police, judging by the supports other regions are giving to the idea even when it becomes clear that the Northern part of Nigeria are scared and sees Amotekun as a threat to them.

What the South-West governors should do is to make sure they follow this to a logical conclusion, and how do they do that? They should make sure that each state in the region set up laws backing Amotekun and if the government at the centre still has issues with it, then the court and the constitution of the land should prevail.

They must also realise that the Attorney-General of the Federation, Malami is just a legal adviser to the president and if he feels Amotekun is illegal, he should approach the court.
