Aston Villa produced a spirited comeback to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Sunday, extending the north London side’s home misery in the Premier League.

Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendía were the heroes for Unai Emery’s side after Rodrigo Bentancur had given Spurs an early lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bentancur opened the scoring inside five minutes, pouncing on a knockdown from Micky van de Ven to slot home clinically past Emiliano Martínez. The Uruguayan midfielder celebrated by placing the ball under his shirt in tribute to his wife’s pregnancy.

However, Villa responded strongly and drew level in the 37th minute through Rogers, who unleashed a sensational 20-yard strike that curled past Guglielmo Vicario for his first goal of the season.

Tottenham, already plagued by injuries to James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma, Destiny Udogie, and Dominic Solanke, also lost captain Cristian Romero during the warm-up and saw Mathys Tel limp off injured in the second half.

Despite moments of promise — including a powerful effort from Wilson Odobert and a near miss from Joao Palhinha — Thomas Frank’s side couldn’t regain control.

Villa punished them in the 77th minute when Lucas Digne set up substitute Buendía, who curled a precise low shot into the bottom corner to complete the turnaround.

New signing Randal Kolo Muani had a golden opportunity to salvage a point in stoppage time but fired over from close range, summing up Tottenham’s frustrating afternoon.

The defeat leaves Spurs sixth in the table and ends their seven-match unbeaten streak in all competitions. Their home struggles continue — just three wins in 18 league games — a major concern for Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou in the summer.

For Villa, the victory marks their fifth straight win and extends their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions, lifting them to 10th place as they push toward Champions League contention.
