The African Union (AU) has strongly denounced the recent attempted military coup in the Republic of Benin, describing the incident as a direct assault on the nation’s democratic framework.

In a statement released on Sunday, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Yousouf emphasized that military interference in political affairs stands in clear violation of the Union’s core values. He noted that the AU has consistently rejected unconstitutional changes of government, stressing that constitutional governance remains essential for peace and stability across the continent.

Yousouf urged the officers involved in the failed takeover to withdraw from their actions, uphold Benin’s constitution, and resume their professional responsibilities. He also appealed to national actors to promote unity, dialogue, and proactive steps to prevent further unrest.

“The rise in coups and attempted coups across parts of the continent is weakening democratic progress, shaking public trust in institutions, and threatening regional stability,” he cautioned.

The AU Chairperson reaffirmed the Union’s backing for President Patrice Talon and the people of Benin, adding that the AU remains committed to supporting efforts to restore normalcy and fortify the country’s democratic institutions.
