Claims that I abandoned traditional rites is false and malicious – Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade

Addressing the necessity of the Alaafin’s trip, he clarified that it falls well within the timeline leading up to his coronation, saying, “Oba Owoade returned to Canada solely to manage his professional responsibilities and ensure everything is in order before his upcoming coronation.”

Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo

The media team for the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has issued a strong rebuke against recent reports suggesting that the monarch has abandoned traditional rites midway through the process.

While speaking with Saturday Vanguard, a key member of the team, Bode Durojaiye, characterised the report as not only misleading but also alarmingly deceptive.

“This headline is designed to mislead the public and misrepresent the esteemed Alaafin throne,” he asserted, emphasizing that the content of the article fails to align with its sensationalised headline.

Clarifying the situation, Durojaiye stated that Oba Owoade has not yet commenced the traditional rites required for his coronation, which is scheduled for April 4, 2025.

“It is impossible for the Alaafin to abandon rites he has not even begun. The report itself acknowledges this fact,” he noted, referencing the publication’s admission about the timeline.

He further explained that the Oyo State Government is fully informed of the Alaafin’s movements and supports his decisions, reinforcing that there is no discord regarding his absence.

“Once traditional rites begin, they cannot be paused or interrupted. Tradition dictates that these rites must be completed without deviation,” Durojaiye reiterated.

Addressing the necessity of the Alaafin’s trip, he clarified that it falls well within the timeline leading up to his coronation, saying, “Oba Owoade returned to Canada solely to manage his professional responsibilities and ensure everything is in order before his upcoming coronation.”

Durojaiye urged the media to exercise greater caution when reporting on matters of cultural significance and traditional leadership.

“We must respect our rich heritage and the values that distinguish our society. Misrepresenting these elements only serves to undermine our cultural identity,” he emphasised.

He rallied the support of the people of Oyo and beyond to unite in support of Oba Owoade, adding, “Let us all come together to assist our new monarch in the significant tasks that lie ahead. Your involvement and backing are invaluable.”
