It appears that the lack of prosecution of offenders has fostered the act of cyberbullying especially under the present circumstances where there is widespread ignorance among internet users. Children and adolescents are prone to the effect of cyberbullying, and with the prevalence of this online aggression, now is the time for parents to help their children.

Cyber bullying in Nigeria

The story is not new to the ear , when we hear about cyber bullying . In recent years, the rise of technology and social media has brought about numerous benefits and opportunities. However, alongside these advancements, a darker side has emerged – cyber bullying. This pervasive issue has infiltrated the lives of many Nigerians, leaving a trail of emotional distress and psychological scars. It’s high time we shed light on this problem and take a stand against the digital torment that plagues our society. Cyberbullying is becoming a common phenomenon in Nigeria as more people engaged in it especially on social media platforms.

The truth about the digital age is the plethora of information that we are constantly being overwhelmed with and the power that the media has given to individuals out there . My story is a short yet riveting one,Like every other teenager the eagerness to be a part of the social media society was a substantial one

In 2019 I opened a social media account for my business and each time I posted a picture promoting my craft I would always have one or two incursive statements from an anonymous account . It soon became a norm for this person ,this made me to start loosing hope in my passion and business and also myself as well but I discerned that I had to do something about it by reporting this account

and completely blocking it. Numerous of other individuals out there  are going through the same experience , if not worse and some are even on the brink of becoming depressed or developing suicidal thoughts. It is worthy to note that there have been reported cases where victims of cyberbullying have committed suicide as a result of fear or shame.

Cyberbullying has been defined as the “process of using the internet, cell phones or other devices to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person.” The word “cyberbullying” is often used interchangeably with “cyber stalking”

Globally there are increasing numbers of cyber bullying but sadly , not much has been done in the Nigerian context and Nigerians have become vulnerable to internet misuse.The prevalence of physical and other types of bullying in Nigeria has led scientists to discover some facts about it. However, since cyberbullying has just started gaining momentum, the government, parents, teachers, and other investigators are trying to gather some statistics about cyberbullying. But so far , over one hundred and fifty-six (23.9%) had harassed someone electronically, 260 (39.8%) had been victimized, and 137 (21.0%) were both victims and perpetrators.

These numbers are still intensifying as some are not even aware that they are victims of cyber bullying or even the perpetrators themselves.

The truth about cyber bullying in Nigeria is that it is not seen as something that has the capability of destroying one s mental health and stability . A major observation is that cyberbullying has gained normalcy and many internet users engaged in it do not seem to be aware of the criminal connotation of their actions. It appears that the lack of prosecution of offenders has fostered the act of cyberbullying especially under the present circumstances where there is widespread ignorance among internet users. Children and adolescents are prone to the effect of cyberbullying, and with the prevalence of this online aggression, now is the time for parents to help their children.

That is why we need to curb this menace. To curb cyberbullying in Nigeria, it’s crucial to raise awareness and promote digital literacy. Encourage open conversations about online safety, empathy, and respect. Implement strict policies and consequences for cyberbullying.
