Day300 Of Our Chibok Girls: I Wish Today Is That Day.
As i write this, i feel empty. I feel as if i have been plunged into a nightmare never to awaken again. Like the only panacea called hope that I’ve been holding on to, is gone. I wish that today is that day that i will dance with joy and sing songs of praise in thanksgiving, for the return of the Chibok Girls. I wish that today is that day that Dr Oby Ezekwesili will dance that break dance she promised me when the girls finally returns. I wish that today is the last day i will set my feet in the Unity Fountain to demand “Bring Back Our Girls, Now & Alive”. I wish that today will be that day when everyone of us who has been demanding for the rescue of the Chibok Girls, will re-take our lives again. But unfortunately, there’s no news about their return. There’s no news about their status. There’s no news at all concerning them. Has the government failed us or not?
Just as if the postponement of the scheduled February 14th election wasn’t torture enough, i have to go through this as well, Has the government not failed us?
According to the Oxford dictionary, integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. The three things i look out for in a man before i can certify him worthy of my trust and respect are, Leadership, Energy and Integrity. If the last one of these three is missing, then i don’t bother myself with the first two. For the avoidance of second-guessing, misrepresentation or interpretation, i have always remained firm that the best way to address a public misconception is to address it directly, no matter how odd or controversial the issue may be. With this criteria and with the happenings since the abduction of these girls, stating that President Jonathan is not a man of integrity will be stating the obvious or perhaps, an understatement.
The parents of the Chibok Girls has suffered what no mother should have to suffer. Hopes raised and dashed, memories there to torment…they, on a daily basis feel the pain a mother feels when a child is lost. Yet we have a government, they have a government. When they met with President Jonathan in the villa, he promised them an expedited action that will see to the immediate return of their children, how many days has gone and what has happened since then? If President Jonathan had integrity he wouldn’t have staged a ceasefire. If he had integrity he wouldn’t have sent the likes of Doyin Okupe to frustrate the efforts of Nigerians who are carrying out their civic duties by standing in solidarity with the abducted girls. If he had integrity he would not have constantly lied to Nigerians in a matter as serious as that of the Chibok girls.
Truth is, there are many things i wish for today, amongst them all, the ultimate is that today had been that day that marked an end to our struggle.
