The Igbo-Biafra Nationalists Movements on Tuesday said the time has come for the people of the South East region to demand for accountability from their governors and lawmakers both federal and state levels.

The convener of the group, Mazi Uche Mefor, stated this to Vanguard regarding what the governors and lawmakers have been doing with their state resources.

Mefor said the call for accountability was part of the agenda of the Igbo-Biafra Nationalists Movements.

According to the Pro-Biafra group, they were of the view that; “The agitation we champion encompasses two critical facets: firstly, the Igbo-Biafra Nationalists Movement and the Indigenous People of Igbo advocate for self-determination to address the longstanding marginalisation of the South-East within Nigeria. Secondly, we demand a robust system of accountability from our elected representatives, ensuring they serve the interests of the populace with transparency and integrity.

“Central to our cause is the unwavering commitment to accountability. We reject the role of passive bystanders in the political landscape, instead asserting our agency to demand transparency and hold those in power to the highest standards. From the echelons of authority in Abuja to the grassroots of our cherished homeland, South-East, Alaigbo, the resounding call echoes: accountability commences at home. It is imperative for each constituent to uphold our elected officials’ actions, commitments, and stewardship of public resources to scrutiny.

“In light of this, we implore all constituents across the South-East to take a firm stance, raise their voices, and ensure our elected representatives are answerable to the populace. The governor of Abia state, Dr Otti has shown the way. Therefore, whether it be governors exercising executive prerogatives, members of state Houses of Assembly enacting legislation, or senators and federal House of Representatives members advocating our interests nationally, we must demand transparency, integrity, and accountability unfailingly.”

“In the face of entrenched marginalisation and apathy, we must safeguard against the misuse or misallocation of resources meant for the betterment of our communities. It is incumbent upon us to ensure that funds allocated to our governors and constituency allowances earmarked for senators and House of Representatives members are judiciously utilized to implement policies, programs, and essential social amenities that elevate and empower ordinary citizens of the South-East.

“We can not afford passivity or indifference towards injustice. We must remain vigilant, proactive, and resolute in our pursuit of a brighter future for ourselves and future generations. Together, let us construct a society where accountability transcends rhetoric and becomes a tangible reality, where the aspirations of the Igbo people find fruition and where justice prevails unyieldingly,” he said.
