Bala Mohammed, Police and Bauchi state

In the heart of Bauchi State, a tempest brews, but it’s not just the clash of religious ideologies causing turmoil. No, it’s the heavy-handed intervention of the Nigerian Police Force that has ignited a firestorm of controversy, further fueling tensions in an already volatile situation.

As a concern citizen of the state, it’s my duty to shine a light on such instances of overreach and question the motives behind them. The recent order from the Police Force command to arrest Imam Abdul’aziz Idiris, amidst the state government’s war with religious clerics, raises serious concerns about the role of law enforcement in matters of faith and governance.

Let’s be clear: the Nigerian Police Force’s primary duty is to uphold the law and maintain peace and order, not to meddle in religious affairs or take sides in theological disputes. Yet, here we are, witnessing a disturbing intrusion into the delicate balance between state and religion.

Imam Abdul’aziz Idiris, like any other religious leader, has the right to express his beliefs and advocate for his community without fear of arbitrary arrest or persecution. By targeting him, the Police Force is sending a chilling message that dissent will not be tolerated, effectively trampling on the fundamental freedoms enshrined in our constitution.

One cannot help but question the motivations behind such a brazen display of power. Is it a genuine concern for public safety, or a thinly veiled attempt to silence dissent and consolidate control? Regardless of the answer, the consequences are dire: eroding trust in law enforcement, escalating tensions within communities, and undermining the very fabric of our democratic society.

It’s time for the Nigerian Police Force to reassess its priorities and refocus on its core mandate of serving and protecting the people, free from political influence or religious bias. As citizens, we must remain vigilant in defending our rights and freedoms against any encroachments, no matter the guise under which they may come. The stakes are too high to remain silent in the face of such blatant overreach.
