The Nigerian energy Regulatory Commission recently proposed a 300% rise in the price of energy. Power expert Mr. Chinedu Bosah has urged the Federal Government to rethink this decision.

In an interview with Newsmen on Sunday in Lagos, Bosah, the National Coordinator of the Coalition for Affordable and Regular Electricity (CARE), made the request.

He claims that all Nigerians will be guaranteed affordability and sustainability through a thorough examination of energy policies.

He did, however, argue that the 300 percent tariff hike was not consumer-friendly and that labour unions should have an open dialogue with the government about it.

Additionally, he asked the government to reevaluate its decision to hike petrol prices, arguing that doing so would ultimately result in higher energy costs for customers.

He said that the government and commercial power providers have to figure out how to deal with problems related to the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity.

Additionally, Festac/Satellite Town’s Customer Consultative Forum Chairman, Dr. Akinrolabu Olukayode, stated that the pricing increase will lower consumers’ standards of living.

Olukayode stated that in order to enhance infrastructure and service delivery, the government must make aggressive investments in the power sector.

He emphasised the difficulties that consumers suffer as a result of frequent blackouts in the electrical grid and the need for costly fuel to provide backup power.

He proposed other measures to increase income and lessen consumer pressure, like charging for petrol in local currency.

Olukayode demanded that the energy industry be restructured to provide governments and regions greater control over their resources.

The expert asked for steps to shield customers from additional financial suffering and warned of the disastrous effects of ongoing tariff hikes.

According to NAN, on April 3, Mr. Musiliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, declared that the nation’s Band A customers would see a 300% hike in their electricity rates.

According to Oseni, the hike would only have an impact on 15% of the nation’s electricity users.

As a result, starting this month, power distribution firms (DisCos) are permitted to increase the price of electricity for urban consumers from N68 to N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour.
