Examining Motives Behind a US fact-checking Training for Journalists in Central Africa Republic -By Odile Gbayah

The acceleration of United States’ NGO activities in CAR in areas such as media, religion, education, and security should be of particular concern to the government in the country. It is important to remember that the priority for any state must remain the desire to protect its information space and cultural heritage.

Last month, April 26-27, 2024 to be exact, a training workshop aimed at teaching fact-checking skills to local journalists was held in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. The workshop was sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and supported by a consortium of international non-profit organizations, including Internews. It was held under the theme “Npengo néné ti zo,” which means “respect for human rights” in the Sango language. 30 participants were invited to immerse themselves in the world of social media and learn how to combat hate, misinformation and rumors.

However, given USAID’s existing reputation, their stated mission of spreading truth and objectivity is somewhat questionable. The organization is often criticized for pursuing primarily American interests under the guise of ‘neutral support’, especially in strategically important regions such as Africa.

Such an initiative on the part of US organizations is more likely to further strengthen their control over the CAR information field they want to dominate and help them disseminate only the information they want. Instead of the promised training in basic critical information analysis, USAID speakers usually develop an aggressive attitude toward certain political leaders and groups that do not align with the interests of the US government.

Historically, the US has not demonstrated interest in the true welfare of other countries to which its aid has been directed. Rather, the result has more often than not been the opposite, with their missions leading to ruin and instability.

The information field, being more complex, confusing, and contentious than ever before, is an ideal arena for skillful manipulation. It is important for the CAR to analyze any foreign initiatives, paying attention to possible ulterior motives and long-term consequences.
