First Lady Remi Tinubu Honoured with Chieftaincy Title in Ikorodu, Lagos
The chieftaincy title further cements Mrs Tinubu’s symbolic role in Lagos’s traditional and civic landscape as her husband, President Bola Tinubu, continues to push forward the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the well-being of Nigerians, following her conferment with a chieftaincy title in Lagos.
Mrs Tinubu was bestowed with the title of Iya Oba of Ikorodu by the traditional ruler, Oba Kabir Shotobi, during an event marking the monarch’s 10th coronation anniversary on Saturday. The celebrations, which began on August 2, highlighted a decade of peace and progress under Oba Shotobi’s reign.
Represented at the ceremony by Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the Lagos State Deputy Governor, the First Lady expressed gratitude for the honour.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to His Royal Majesty, the royal families, and the good people of Ikorodu for finding me worthy of this distinguished recognition,” Mrs Tinubu said. “This gesture is not only a personal honour, but a call to continued service. The title of Iya Oba carries with it, not just prestige, but also a responsibility.”
She also acknowledged the deep cultural significance of the title, saying,
“Ikorodu Kingdom holds a special place in the heart of Lagos,” and praised the community for producing “generations of industrious persons.”
Commending Oba Shotobi, the First Lady added:
“I congratulate Your Majesty and the people of Ikorodu Kingdom on your 10th coronation anniversary and commend Your Majesty’s leadership over the past decade. Your tenure is marked by peace, progress, stability, and strengthening of our cultural heritage.”
Several dignitaries also paid tribute to the traditional ruler’s leadership.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano North) applauded Oba Shotobi for raising Ikorodu’s national profile:
“Through his efforts, Ikorodu has transformed from a rural community to a business hub,” he said, noting the monarch’s inclusive and impactful governance.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, both praised Oba Shotobi’s dedication to development and cultural preservation.
NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa also commended the Ikorodu monarch, citing his positive influence and contributions to the community’s growth.
