From Terrorism to Organized Crime: Boko Haram and ISWAP’s change of strategy reflects an act of cowardice, seeking recognition in the face of defeat.” — #EndBokoHaram

Boko Haram used to be one of the most deadly and powerful terrorist groups globally. Its display of savagery, callousness, and wanton destruction over the last two decades placed the group at the top of the global insecurity index.

The impact of Boko Haram includes countless lives lost and millions displaced, either as IDPs or refugees. Their unholy portrayal of violence led to the downfall of many communities.

In recent years, facing technical and tactical defeats, Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) turned to mass involvement in organized criminal activities such as attacks on civilian sub-targets, vandalism, kidnapping, and smuggling. This shift arose from a massive onslaught against the groups.

Infighting emerged between Boko Haram and their faction within ISWAP due to apparent tension within their ranks and territory. Unable to launch successful attacks on military formations, Boko Haram resorted to organized crimes to maintain relevance, exhibiting a peak of cowardice.

Their sources of livelihood and infrastructure were drastically truncated, forcing them to struggle to attract public attention through acts of mayhem on civilian sub-targets. This reflects the defeat they’ve experienced in recent years, rendering them valueless in the criminal and terror enterprise.

In light of these shifts in strategy, it is imperative for the international community to remain vigilant in the fight against terrorism and organized crime. The challenges posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP demand sustained collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and security of affected regions. Let us unite to #EndBokoHaram and work towards a world free from the threats of terror and crime.
