Fuel crisis and issue in Nigeria

Removal of fuel subsidy simply means the government not paying for the difference between pump price and the actual cost price of importing fuel anymore.it technically means full deregulation of the downstream sector to pave way for vibrant competitions by other interested investors.

With the removal of fuel subsidy, fuel will have to be sold in accordance with the prevailing market price based on the actual cost of importation.

There are various cause that led to the removal of fuel subsidy. According to the Nigeria petroleum company in which they revealed that the agency recorded zero revenue from oil export due to the subsidy payment. Petrol subsidy alone for October 2022 gulped 199 billion naira. Nigeria incurs too much cost to pay fuel subsidies. There is a need to consider removing the fuel subsidy to fund other sectors of the economy.

Removal of fuel subsidy on the other hand could lead to an increase in the prices of petroleum products. This in turns ,could lead to inflation and reduced purchasing power for consumers. This could have a ripple effect across the economy, impacting the cost of goods and services.

According to our elders, there is a saying that every problems must have a solution. When taking a look at the consequences we could see Nigerians have a lot to deal with due to the removal of fuel subsidy.

Thirdly, to prevent price gouging and ensure fair pricing, the government should implement effective price regulation mechanisms and lastly, as a long term solution, the government should accelerate investment in renewable energy sources.

In conclusion, while the complete removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may have short term implications, finding immediate solutions is essential to mitigate the effects on the population. It is imperative for the government to prioritize the well being of it’s citizens and ensure a fair and equitable transition towards a more sustainable and economically viable future.
