His Immortal Highness -By Abdullahi O. Haruna

The treatment meted out to Dattijo Sani by his boss and mentor because of his Freudian slip was needless and unfair, the young man may have erred in addressing His Supreme Majesty, the Permanent Emir of Life, His Immortal Highness as former Emir but Mallam Nasir El-Rufai should have protected this lad. Infallibility is to God while mortals are helpless pawns in the dictates of imperfections.

Emir Sanusi and Elrufai

Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari are so humble in leadership – compare them to those with almost no leadership and see the crass arrogance in power. A lot of us are warehoused in this arrogant abode. I know of a dude who gets offended by people’s calls simply because he is now in government. I once went to see a rep member at the National Assembly, having waited endlessly for him, we decided to find our way out until we saw him on the way. Excitedly, we rushed to him and the dude goes like,’ You know I won’t answer you here, you know where my office is’, and I never went to him again only on the street where we all now belong after his all-powerful reign as a lawmaker! He thought that place was his permanent abode.

Elrufai Muhammad and Sanusi

In this life, people must realise the vainness in it, nothing seems to last. Just this moment you are up, count the next moment you are isolated in lonely embrace. We saw what happened to Rueben Abati when his phone stopped ringing the moment he left the office. He became useless to them perhaps because he changed the key to his house and once he was out of the house, the people turned their back on him. So it was a lonely Abati that cried out in solitude.

He disrobed his loyal aide and Chief of Staff because his friend said so. That is a cut in the psyche of loyalty, no matter what, a mentor shouldn’t strip his mentee naked this way. This is a slight on mentoring and Mallam tragically got it wrong here.

No matter the time on the throne, one day they would be another occupier. This should guide us as humans for nothing is permanent. The Khalifa lost so many followers today because of what happened in Kaduna. A mentor empowers capacity, he does not incapacitate. Whether we like it or not, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has just punctured the tube of real leadership which abhors vindictiveness.
