How Windstorm killed one and ruins over 150 homes in Nasarawa, Taraba

One person was confirmed dead, several others were injured, and 150 buildings were damaged in Agbashi community, Doma Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, as a result of a rainfall that wreaked devastation.

Takum, Southern Taraba, locals are assessing their losses after a destructive windstorm and torrential downpour blasted through the town on Tuesday, destroying property believed to be worth millions of naira.

John Ari, Vice Chairman of Nasarawa State’s Doma Local Government Area, confirmed the occurrence to journalists yesterday, stating that the tragedy occurred Tuesday evening, leaving several people homeless.

According to Ari, “It is true that the windstorm destroyed over 150 houses including mosque, school. The incident happened yesterday in the evening.”

Also, Anthony Oshinyeka, interim Chairman of the Agbashi Development Association (ADA), described the occurrence as sad, stating that the Bassa village in Iponu, on the outskirts of Agbashi, was significantly hit, with one man killed and seven others injured.

Oshinyeka urged the state and federal governments to react immediately to mitigate the terrible impact on the distressed residents of the Agbashi neighbourhood.

He also asked for the prompt release of relief items and medical supplies to the impacted towns.

The roaring storm in Taraba tore roofing sheets from residential houses, shops, worship institutions, and power poles. As of press time, the number of buildings destroyed by the windstorm was unknown.

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba state has dispatched a government delegation to assess the extent of damage suffered by the residents.
