Rape

The rate at which the cases of rape increase in Nigeria is alarming, which has put great fear in the mind of women. Even though the freedom of movement has been enshrined in the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, as one of the fundamental human rights that every human being must enjoy, but the incessant rape in Nigeria has restricted their freedom of movement because of the Animals under the human skin.
I have seen different opinions on Social Media on the main cause of rape in Nigeria; some are of the opinion that the main cause of rape is as a result of indecent dressing by the ladies of nowadays.

In my own opinion, the excuse given by these people is not a justified excuse for a ladies to be raped. This is because, we have heard a lot of cases on how an old woman was raped; a little girl below the age of 12 years have been raped. The question that I want to ask these people is that; are these set of people also dress indecently? The answer is ‘No’!

Even though I am not in support of indecency in our society, but to be sincere with you, that’s not a genuine defense for raping ladies. In this piece of write-up, I would explain the few causes of Rape in our contemporary world and the way forward to curb this menace in our society.

One of the major factors that precipitated the increase in rape in our society is due to an evil act and the blood of wickedness in the body of some Animal calling themselves a human being. These people don’t have human feelings; ritualists are a good example of this, these unscrupulous individuals are not only raping them for their sexual satisfaction, but the reason some of them are committing these acts is to make use of the victims for ritual.

Lack of good parental background is also one of the causes of rape in our society. Our parents also contributed mostly to incessant rape in our society, this is because some children are not well trained in their house. As the proverb says “Charity begins at home”, the inability of our parents to train their female children on how to dress decently has caused a negative effect on the women of nowadays.

Some parents would send their female child an errand in the middle of midnight just to buy an unnecessary thing; this useless individual would take advantage of that to rape the innocent girl as a result of the negligence of the parents. Lack of good parental upbringing of male children and their failure to enlighten their children about the consequences of this evil act can trigger them to behave in this manner.

The problem of insecurity in Nigeria has also contributed immensely to the cause of rape in Nigeria. Had it been the life of the citizens are well protected, what happened to Uwa may not happen to her, but due to lack of security in the country, the soul of an innocent girl was wasted as a result of insecurity in Nigeria.

To proffer solutions to these problems, our parents have a vital role to play in giving their children a good home training and the government should ensure that the life of the citizens are well protected in the country, this would go a long way to curb this menace in our society.

The maximum punishment for rape that has been stipulated in the Criminal Code in Nigeria Sec 357 and 358 should be properly implemented in our courts:

Rape is defined as “having unlawful carnal knowledge of a woman or girl, without her consent, or with her consent, if the consent is obtained by force or by means of threats or intimidation of any kind, or by fear of harm, or by means of false act, or, in case of a married woman, be personating her husband.” This offense is punishable by imprisonment for life, with or without caning.

Lastly, to reduce cases of rape in Nigeria, the immediate sanction of the victims should be their first priority. The way the government is handling the rape cases is uncalled for and this is not supposed to be, this gave the rapists a rest of mind thinking that they can go scot-free and the victims are dying. Do your part in order to curb the incessant rape in Nigeria.
