Is Protest Halam Or Haram? -By Ibrahim Abdulganiyu Abojumeji
Protest, in Islam has two views, which in short, I shall elaborate it to you all. First one, some Muslims scholars like ibn abass and uthaymin said it is haram because of some certain reasons, one of the reasons is a word of prophet Muhammad SAW thus “إتوهم حقهم واسألو الله عن حقوقكم” which means ” give them their rights and ask Allah over your rights”. The prophet knew what could happen if protest is permitted, to avoid that he advised begging Allah on certain issues and to give them (leaders) their rights.
Protest is an act of demonstrating a strong disagreement on or disapproval over something. It could also be defined as situation in which people show their strong disagreement on certain issues implemented by institution, association or government, with aim to change or make it less server.
But, before doing anything, one has to confirm, weather it is good or wrong in one’s religious views. Not only to confirm but also act as your religion laid it down. Many a people do what please them without consulting their religious leaders about it, and may eventually lead them astray or make their deeds which they thought is worthy became worthless.
Allah said “فاسألو أهل الذكر إن كنتم لا تعلمون” which means “so ask the people of message if you don’t know “.

They also pointed to a word of Allah in the Quran thus “أطيعو الله وأطيع الرسول وأولى أمر منكم” which means “obey Allah and obey the messager and those who in authority among you.
Second, some Muslims scholars said it is halal with some conditions, : it must be peaceful one. They should not occupy the road. The should not hold any harmful weapon and many more with a word of prophet Muhammad saw thus “من رأى منكم المنكر فيغيره اله وإن يستطع فبلسانه وإن يستطع فبقلبه فذالك من أضعف الإيمان” which means “if one of you see a bad thing one should correct it with his hand, if one can’t, one should correct it with his tongue, if one can’t, one should correct it with his thought but that is the weakest believe “.
If we look into these two views, we can judge, what we are doing in Nigeria presently is haram, am not talking about the outset of the protest but presently!!! Because some bad people have hijacked it from the people who started it. I will use one of the words of prophet Muhammad saw thus “إن الحلال بينة وإن الحرام بينة ” which means “good is clear and bad is clear “. In Nigeria presently we are doing rebellion or riots not protest and those things are haram.
May almighty Allah lead us through amin!!!
