The unfolding political crisis in Rivers State, Nigeria, involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, has reached a critical juncture, eliciting grave concerns at the national level. Recent developments have plunged Rivers State into a severe political crisis, ignited by an attempt to impeach Governor Fubara. This maneuver, allegedly orchestrated by influential figures with vested interests, was a precursor to impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, leading to the arson of the Rivers House of Assembly and allegations of assassination attempts on Fubara.

My  use of strong language and vivid descriptions regarding Wike, akin to those employed in characterizing former U.S. President Donald Trump, serves as a method of applying psychological theories concerning authoritarian and despotic leaders. It’s important to clarify that this approach doesn’t constitute a clinical psychological diagnosis of either individual.

The echoes of Trumpian politics are striking. Wike, much like Trump, believes in loyalty above all else. Those who stray from his ideology or assert their independence face swift retribution. This style of governance, reminiscent of Trump’s own penchant for punishing dissenters, poses a grave danger to the democratic process. Democracies thrive on the diversity of opinions, the freedom to disagree, and the ability to challenge authority. When leaders suppress dissent and demand unwavering allegiance, they undermine the very principles upon which democracy stands.

In the heart of the storm, where political loyalty clashes with democratic sanctity, Wike’s brazen approach mirrors the audacity of former President Trump. Both figures, entrenched in power dynamics, share a propensity for challenging the norms that underpin democratic governance. Wike, much like Trump, blurs the lines between authority and authoritarianism, raising profound questions about the very essence of democratic principles.

At the core of this saga lies Wike’s unapologetic authoritarianism, a trait that echoes the divisive tactics employed by Trump during his tenure. Wike’s reported influence over the judiciary, police, and security forces paints a concerning picture, indicating a calculated erosion of the checks and balances vital for a thriving democracy. His actions, akin to Trump’s approach, highlight a systemic disinterest in adhering to the democratic rules of the game.

The clash between loyalty and democratic sanctity intensifies as the people of Rivers State stand united against Wike’s overreach. Their resilience mirrors the global struggle for the preservation of democratic values, as they resist attempts to curtail individual freedoms and suppress dissenting voices. The battle cry for democratic sanctity reverberates not only within the boundaries of Rivers State but also across the broader landscape of political discourse.

There are indeed similarities in the way some political leaders, including former President Trump, approach loyalty and punishment within their circles. Demanding loyalty from subordinates is not uncommon in politics, and it can be seen as a way for leaders to maintain control and ensure the implementation of their policies and agendas. However, when this demand for loyalty leads to abuse of power, it raises concerns about democratic values and principles. This is the problem with Wike.

The focal point of this political drama is Governor Fubara, who took office just five months ago. Fubara, once considered a protégé of Wike, has found himself at odds with his former mentor’s domineering style. Wike’s attempt to micromanage Fubara’s administration has sparked resentment and resistance, leading Fubara to assert his independence and challenge Wike’s authority.

Governor Fubara’s claim that security forces were compromised and used against him underscores the importance of maintaining the independence and impartiality of law enforcement agencies in any democratic society. It highlights the need for thorough investigations to ensure that the rule of law prevails and to hold accountable those responsible for any misuse of power. Such incidents emphasize the critical role that transparency, accountability, and adherence to democratic principles play in upholding the stability and integrity of a nation. Public trust in institutions, especially the police, must be restored for a just society.

The crisis in Rivers State originates from an alleged attempt by certain members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Fubara, resulting in widespread chaos and tension within the state. The situation further escalated due to an explosion at the assembly complex, raising suspicions of a conspiracy aimed at removing the governor from office. Governor Fubara’s accusations against security operatives have intensified concerns about the fairness and conduct of law enforcement agencies in the state.

The call for Governor Fubara to assert his executive powers and confront Wike underscores the urgent need to halt Wike’s authoritarian tactics. Authoritarians typically seek control through strict obedience to authority and often suppress dissent. This crisis underscores a power struggle for authoritarian dominance within the political arena.

A detailed report from DAILY POST on October 31, 2023, shed light on the deep-rooted political unrest in Rivers State, revealing the complex power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Pan-Africanist activist Chetam Thierry Nwala provided comprehensive insights into the ongoing confrontation. Nwala disclosed Wike’s insatiable demands, including a hefty 25% of all state allocations and a staggering N2 billion from the recent N5 billion federal palliatives. Wike’s pervasive influence extended to the current administration, evident in key appointments and the Chief Security Officer handpicked by the former governor. During a recent meeting with South-South leaders, Wike did not explicitly deny but rather dismissively gestured, avoiding verbal confirmation, accusations of demanding N20 billion monthly from the state administration. This dismissive attitude drew striking parallels to Trump’s demand for loyalty, reminiscent of Trump’s dismissal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions on November 7, 2018. This incident underscores Trump’s preference for loyalists in crucial roles, reflecting the power and loyalty dynamics in the Rivers State political landscape.

In the intricate web of Rivers State politics, President Bola Tinubu has entered the fray between Governor Simi Fubara and his predecessor. This intervention occurred during a National Police Council meeting at the State House, Abuja. Wike, once a political ally of Fubara, had ensured Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election in Rivers State during his tenure as governor. In an unexpected turn of events, despite being from the opposition party, Wike was rewarded with a ministerial position by Tinubu. However, Tinubu’s involvement in this state matter is limited, as he cannot interfere with the internal affairs of a democratic, independent state unless the feud escalates into a national crisis. The bitter feud, plunging the state into political chaos, ideally should be resolved by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders, including governors, rallying around the victimized Governor Fubara. Wike’s allegiance to Tinubu of a different party is viewed as betrayal, further complicating the internal dynamics of the PDP in Rivers State.

Given the ongoing political upheaval in Rivers State, Governor Fubara can draw inspiration from Governor Godwin Obaseki, who previously took a resolute stance by ordering the arrest of former governor Adams Oshiomhole. Oshiomhole was allegedly involved in disrupting the state’s peace. As the state’s chief security officer, Governor Obaseki understood his responsibility to protect the residents, policies, and government. Likewise, Governor Fubara bears the same responsibility, requiring him to act decisively to maintain order and uphold the rule of law within the state.

I propose what I term the “Obaseki political treatment,” a decisive approach that Governor Fubara could consider adopting against Minister Nyesom Wike. Wike, a former governor of Rivers state, should refrain from interfering with the state’s governance.

This comparison to Obaseki’s protective approach is not to overlook Obaseki’s own struggles, including power struggles and reported dictatorial relations with his deputy, Philip Shaibu, akin to Oshiomhole’s reported   desire to at one time dominate Edo state’s political landscape. However, my point here is that Governor Fubara must assert his authority as the chief security officer of the state and take a tough stance against Wike. Wike, alongside other influential figures like Governor Yaya Bello of Kogi state, who was recently described as a mini-god by Senator-elect Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, exhibited despotic behavior, using fear, bribery, intimidation, money, and power to control others. It remains baffling why individuals engaging in such actions are not held accountable, exposing the country’s compromised and weak institutions.

Respecting democratic processes and allowing states to function autonomously without external interference is paramount. The call for autonomy and respect for democratic principles echoes not only in Rivers State but resonates across the entire nation, serving as a reminder of the importance of upholding the foundational principles of a healthy democracy in Nigeria.

In political contexts, leaders often seek to build and maintain a loyal base of supporters to enhance their influence and advance their agenda. However, when possessive language is used excessively or in a way that implies an authoritarian approach, it can be seen as a red flag for potential authoritarian tendencies. This is where the Obaseki political treatment (OPT) should prevail.

Similar to former President Trump’s emphasis on loyalty, the situation involving Governor Wike underscores the role of public perception and democratic institutions. The will of the people and the resilience of democratic processes serve as powerful forces in maintaining a healthy democracy. Leaders are accountable to the citizens they serve, and actions that undermine democratic values are met with resistance, scrutiny, and consequences.

The political landscape in Rivers State has become a battleground, with Wike’s influence pitted against the aspirations of the people and the integrity of democratic governance. The power struggle unfolding serves as a stark reminder that no leader, regardless of their stature, should manipulate the democratic process for personal gain. The crisis involves power struggles, accusations, and counteraccusations among key political figures, threatening not only the state’s stability but also democratic values and the rule of law in Nigeria. Effective and impartial intervention, transparent investigations, and a commitment to democratic principles are essential to resolving the crisis and preventing further escalation.
