Lagos APC Faults Peter Obi’s Remarks on Nnamdi Kanu, Calls Position “Misguided”
The Lagos State APC criticizes Peter Obi’s remarks describing Nnamdi Kanu’s conviction as “unfortunate,” warning that his comments could politicize a sensitive security issue. Spokesman Seye Oladejo urges restraint, respect for judicial processes, and responsible public communication.
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized the recent comments made by the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding the conviction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Obi had described Kanu’s arrest, detention, and eventual sentencing as “unfortunate,” arguing that the development highlighted leadership shortcomings and could worsen tensions instead of easing them. He made the remarks in a statement titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility,” released by his Media Aide, Ibrahim Umar.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Lagos APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo faulted Obi’s stance, insisting it was inappropriate for political figures to weigh in on issues still undergoing judicial review. He warned against comments that might appear to undermine national security agencies or ongoing court processes.
Oladejo said Obi’s remarks risked being perceived as politicizing a sensitive national security matter and urged public figures to avoid statements capable of heightening public emotions.
The APC further maintained that balanced and consistent engagement is crucial when addressing issues tied to national security and public order. The party stressed the importance of respecting judicial decisions while allowing lawful avenues for appeal and dialogue where appropriate.
Oladejo added that political interests should not influence national security concerns and advised leaders to prioritize unity and stability in their public statements.
Reaffirming its position, the Lagos APC said the Federal Government remains committed to addressing matters related to terrorism, treason, and national stability in line with constitutional provisions and the rule of law.
The party urged Nigerians to view Obi’s comments within the wider national political context and called for restraint, emphasizing the need for responsible public commentary on sensitive national issues.
