Multiple Casualties Reported as Fulani Herdsmen Open Fire Near Market in Anambra Community
Several people were feared dead after Fulani herdsmen attacked the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia, Anambra State, prompting security investigations and community outrage.
Panic swept through Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday after Fulani herdsmen attacked the Fair (Afor) Market Junction.
Although full details were still emerging, eyewitnesses and early reports indicated that several people—mostly young residents—lost their lives after the attackers struck along the Awka–Onitsha old road. The area reportedly showed clear signs of a violent confrontation.
Reacting to the incident, the President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, condemned the attack, describing it as tragic and senseless.
In a statement, Okoye said he received the news with “deep shock” and confirmed that multiple casualties had been recorded. He added that he had contacted security agencies, who had already begun investigations to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
He urged residents to remain calm, stay alert, and cooperate with security personnel working to restore peace in the community.
Okoye also condoled with the families affected, assuring them that the union would support efforts to protect lives and maintain stability in Nawfia.
As at the time this report was filed, the Anambra State Police Command had not yet issued an official reaction.
