Ojuelegba Bridge Gridlock as Container Truck Overturns in Lagos
Traffic chaos hit Surulere, Lagos, after a fully loaded container truck overturned on Ojuelegba Bridge, blocking most of the road and causing a massive gridlock toward Maryland.
Severe traffic congestion disrupted movement in parts of Surulere, Lagos, on Tuesday morning after a fully loaded container truck overturned on the Ojuelegba Bridge, inward the Island, near Abati Barracks.
The accident led to the near-complete closure of the bridge, with about 90 per cent of the roadway blocked, triggering a long traffic queue that extended toward the Maryland axis.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and begin evacuation of the fallen truck. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected area.
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, appealed to motorists and residents to remain patient, assuring them that steps were being taken to restore normal traffic flow.
“This is to formally notify motorists and the general public that the Ojuelegba Bridge inward Stadium has been temporarily closed to vehicular traffic following the collapse of a fully laden 40-foot containerised truck, which toppled onto its side on the bridge,” Osiyemi said.
He added that LASTMA officers were already on ground with the necessary equipment, coordinating emergency and recovery efforts to ensure the safe and timely removal of the truck.
“In the interim, and pending the conclusion of the evacuation exercise, motorists heading towards the Stadium axis are advised to divert under the Ojuelegba Bridge, inward Stadium, to ease traffic flow and minimise congestion,” the commissioner stated.
Osiyemi assured the public that further updates would be communicated as the recovery operation progresses.
