PDP Condemns Maiduguri Mosque Blast, Faults Government Over Insecurity
The PDP criticises the Federal Government over the Maiduguri mosque explosion, describing the attack as a failure of security and urging urgent action to protect lives and places of worship.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the Christmas Eve explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, describing the attack as a grim indicator of Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation and a failure of government to safeguard lives and property.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, mnipr, the opposition party said the incident highlights what it called the harsh security reality confronting Nigerians, stressing that protecting citizens remains the most basic duty of any government.
“The news of an explosion in a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri is another sad reminder of the rising insecurity that has become the unfortunate contemporary reality that Nigerians face,” the party stated.
The PDP criticised the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity, accusing the current administration of neglecting its core responsibility to citizens while resorting to rhetoric instead of decisive action.
“This is totally unacceptable; the irreducible minimum the government should offer its people is the protection of lives and property. This administration has failed woefully in this respect and should rise to the occasion rather than resort to rhetoric and playing politics with security,” Ememobong said.
The party expressed condolences to families affected by the blast, noting that attacks on places of worship carry serious moral and social consequences for the nation.
“We commiserate with the families of those who have lost their loved ones in this senseless attack,” the statement read, adding that no individual should be killed while worshipping.
The PDP warned that persistent assaults on religious centres could undermine constitutional freedoms and fuel fear across faith communities.
“If these attacks on places of worship continue unchecked, they will not only violate the constitutional right of Nigerians to freely worship but will also create an atmosphere of fear that threatens the very fabric of our religious society,” Ememobong said.
Calling for urgent action, the party urged both Federal and State Governments to strengthen security nationwide, particularly during the festive season.
“We call on the Federal and State Governments to take immediate and practical steps to protect our citizens throughout this yuletide season and beyond. Nigerians deserve more than empty promises and political rhetoric,” the PDP added.
Emphasising the gravity of the situation, the party insisted that rising insecurity must be addressed with urgency and seriousness.
“This escalating insecurity has become unbearable and must be confronted with the urgency and seriousness it deserves,” the statement concluded.
