Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has said that the ongoing wave of political defections in the South-East does not translate to political dominance or “capture” of the region.

Obi made the remark while speaking with reporters in Abuja, according to a statement released by his media team on Wednesday.

Responding to questions about the recent spate of defections—particularly that of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—Obi maintained that Nigeria is under a democracy, not a military regime where states can be seized or controlled.

“Peter Mbah is a good friend of mine. And I believe that as governor, he must have taken his decision based on his own political views and calculations,” Obi said.

“As for the alleged plot to capture the South-East, we are not in a military time when you capture people. You are a leader; you do the right things for them to follow you. So I don’t think anybody is capturing anywhere. The government needs to do more if it wants the people to support it.”

Obi stressed that governors and senators do not determine the political direction of a state, insisting that “the people will ultimately decide where to go.”

Obi Reaffirms Stance on Nnamdi Kanu

Speaking on the planned protest by activist Omoyele Sowore demanding the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Obi reiterated his long-held belief in dialogue over confrontation.

“There was no need for his arrest in the first place,” Obi stated.
“I’ve always said that I will consult, negotiate and discuss with anybody who is agitating. Go and check what I’ve said before 2020, 2022, and even 2024 — I’ve been consistent.

“Now that it has gone to court, the rules should be followed. Not just for Nnamdi Kanu, but for all agitators across the nation. Let’s dialogue with them, and whatever we do, let’s follow the rules.”

He commended those advocating peaceful dialogue, describing such actions as “steps in the right direction.”

On New INEC Chair: We Want Credible Elections

Obi also shared his expectations for the newly nominated INEC Chairman, Dr. Etekamba Umoren Amupitan, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“He’s a Nigerian, and we want a new Nigeria where elections will be free, fair, and credible,” Obi said.
“When he’s confirmed, I’ll congratulate him and remind him that one day he’ll leave that post. Let him ensure he keeps his reputation intact.”

He emphasized that those in leadership should prioritize integrity and accountability, noting,

“None of us is going to be here forever, so whatever position we find ourselves in, it’s to do the right thing.”

Education: Foundation of National Development

Obi, who was in Abuja to support Dr. Moses Paul, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the February 2026 FCT elections, visited the LEA Nursery/Primary School in Kapwa, a suburb of Abuja.

Describing the school’s state as deplorable, Obi lamented the lack of toilet facilities and dilapidated furniture for the over 200 pupils.

“The most important thing we can do as a nation is to invest in basic education. Investment in children is the most important,” he said.
“I am here today to support my brother, Dr. Moses Paul. You know he is campaigning and going round the communities in his constituency.”
