Damarea Liao, Princess of Benin, the Oba’s estranged daughter has officially begun her royal duties, ushering in a modern era for the historic Benin Kingdom. While her appointment has been met with celebration among progressives and younger generations, it has also sparked controversy over her decision to forgo certain time-honored traditions.

The formal introduction ceremony took place at the Royal Palace in Benin City last week, attended by dignitaries, traditional chiefs, and a sizable public crowd. Princess Damarea, wearing a contemporary take on the Edo royal regalia, pledged to serve as a “bridge between past and present,” emphasizing the need for cultural evolution.

Princess Damarea responded in a public address that while she respects her heritage deeply, some customs “do not reflect the values of today’s Benin or the role of women in leadership.” She added that embracing her position in a way that aligns with her principles was “both an honor and a responsibility.”
