Without having to play, Paris Saint-Germain was crowned the Ligue 1 champion on Sunday following Monaco’s 3-2 loss to Lyon on the road, their closest rivals.

With three games left, PSG has an insurmountable 12-point advantage over Monaco at the top of the table and is the champion for a record-tying 12th time in French history.

PSG needed a late equalizer in the 95th minute to steal a 3-3 draw, but ultimately, they might have won the title on Saturday with a victory over struggling Le Havre at home.

Though they were 12 points ahead with 12 points yet to play for, coach Luis Enrique claimed after the game that his team had won the league “without a doubt” as they were 12 points clear with only 12 points left to play for, and also boast a far superior goal difference to that of Monaco.

Despite the principality club’s defeat in Lyon, PSG’s ascent becomes official, and they are now prepared for Wednesday’s away first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Wissam Ben Yedder’s strike gave Monaco the lead in the first minute of play in Lyon, but the hosts responded through goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Said Benrahma before the half.
