Schools in Kaduna South Eschew Essay Competition -By Abdulazeez Alhassan

Universal Writers and Authors(UWA) is a Kaduna-based organisation, which aims at enlivening and revival of the lost glory of reading and writing culture amongst youths of Kaduna State and Nigeria at large.

Part of its programmes, is inter-secondary schools Essay Writing Competition. This is where students from Secondary schools are given topics to select and compete for. The competition is a nation-wide event, which has four stages; local government and zonal stage, then state and national level. Therefore, it is a knock-out process.

It is disheartening that only 11 schools participated for the Essay Writing Competition from the over 45 schools that were invited from Kaduna South local government. The schools reportedly cited flimsy and unnecessary excuses. Some were saying “they may not participate because their students are poor in English”, while others were saying “they have to look for a guide to coach the students” This is sad and embarrassing. Therefore, it is important for public and private schools to note that, the Kaduna Sate Ministry of Education is in partnership with UWA, and the organisation will not hesitate to submit some report to the ministry if needed.

Learning-Field Academy emerged winner among the 11 schools that participated from Kaduna South, in the just concluded Essay Writing Competition.

More so, the organisation wishes to inform the general public that its Kaduna state zonal Essay Competition is slated to hold on 26th, March 2022.
