The Super Eagles have named Finidi George as their new head coach

George’s appointment was declared by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday in a statement posted on its official website.

“The Board of Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles,” the announcement said in part.

George took over as temporary head coach of the senior national team in March after 20 months as Jose Peseiro’s assistant.

The Super Eagles’ two friendlies against Ghana and Mali in Morocco were managed by the Enyimba coach.

George’s team achieved a historic triumph in the opening game over Ghana, defeating the Black Stars 2-1 and ending an 18-year losing run to the fierce rival.

Still, the team suffered a defeat 0-2 against Mali in the next round.

George, a well-known member of Nigeria’s illustrious “Golden Generation,” is best known for having won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and for representing his country in the FIFA World Cup finals, when they finished as the second-most entertaining team in their first-ever trip.

George has 62 caps for Nigeria. His remarkable career includes participation in several competitions, such as the FIFA World Cup and the AFCON, where he won gold, silver, and bronze in different editions between 1992 and 2002.
