Terrorists Kidnap Students, Teachers From Catholic School in Niger State — Government Confirms Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Terrorists have kidnapped students and teachers from St. Mary’s School, a Catholic institution in Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attack reportedly took place around 2am today.

Confirming the incident, Secretary to the Niger State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, said authorities are still working to determine the exact number of abducted pupils.

He stated:
“The exact number of abducted pupils is yet to be confirmed as security agencies continue to assess the situation.”

The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Ellema, also verified the attack, noting that police tactical units, military personnel, and other security operatives have already been deployed:
“Police tactical units, military components and other security agencies have moved to the scene, combing the forests with a view to rescue the abducted students.”

Usman disclosed that the abduction occurred despite earlier intelligence warnings of increased terrorist activity in parts of Niger North Senatorial District.
In response to the heightened threat level, the state government had previously issued directives suspending all construction activities and ordering the temporary closure of boarding schools in the zone.

He added that a full-scale investigation and search-and-rescue operation is underway to secure the safe return of the victims. The government assured that it is maintaining close communication with security agencies and will provide updates as developments unfold.

Similarly, the Head of Disaster and Relief in Agwara Local Government, Ahmed Abdullahi Rofia, confirmed that the exact number of abducted students and staff is still being verified.

When contacted, the Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said detailed information would be released later.
