University of Jos Confirms Murder of 300-Level Student by Colleague, Condemns Act
The University of Jos has confirmed the murder of 300-level student Peter Mafuyai by his colleague, clarifying that the incident occurred off campus. The school says security agencies are investigating to ensure justice.
The University of Jos (Unijos) has confirmed the tragic killing of Peter Mafuyai, a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance, allegedly murdered by his friend and fellow student, Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level student of Agricultural Science.
The confirmation was made in a condolence statement issued on Monday in Jos by Dr. Rejoice Songden, the university’s Registrar.
“The Management of the University of Jos has received with deep sadness the report of the unfortunate incident involving two students, which tragically resulted in the death of a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance,”
the statement read.
Dr. Songden strongly condemned the act but clarified that the incident did not occur on campus, contrary to reports circulating in some media outlets.
“The deceased was allegedly murdered by his friend, Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Science.
The management wishes to clarify that the incident occurred off campus, not within the university premises as erroneously reported,”
she stated.
She extended condolences on behalf of the University Council, management, staff, and students to the family and friends of the deceased, praying for divine comfort during the difficult time.
The registrar also explained that the university had concluded the 2024/2025 academic session on August 30, meaning students were not in session at the time of the incident.
“Students are expected back on campus for the 2025/2026 academic session on November 10,”
she added.
Dr. Songden assured parents, guardians, and the public that adequate security measures have been strengthened around the university to protect lives and property.
“We deeply regret this tragic development and assure everyone that the university is cooperating fully with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and that justice is served,”
she affirmed.
