The United States government announced on Wednesday that it will begin canceling flights from Friday, with a 10 percent reduction in scheduled capacity across 40 major air traffic regions, as the ongoing government shutdown continues to cause severe staffing shortages.

“There is going to be a 10-percent reduction in capacity at 40 of our locations,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told reporters at a press briefing.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Bryan Bedford confirmed that the cuts would affect “40 high-traffic environment markets,” warning that the measure is necessary to maintain safety and prevent operational chaos amid the funding impasse.

The move is expected to significantly impact air travel nationwide, with major hubs like Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles likely to face widespread delays and cancellations if the shutdown persists.
