Giving pet names such as, Girlfriend, baby girl, and others with female friends in Nigeria can easily be misinterpreted as condescending or inappropriate, it can be seen as infantilizing, or treating the person like a child or in some cases it can even be seen as flirting or showing romantic interest, this is why some people find it awkward for women to accept such pet names or hang out.

Some people assume that pet names are only used in romantic relationship but actually it is a sign that shows closeness with a friend, depending on personal preference and individual boundaries. Girls’ hangouts can be a great way to bond with friends, share experiences, and create memories. It can also be a source of support and comfort, especially during difficult times, boost self-esteem also, spending time with friends can also increase feelings of happiness and life satisfaction. And when girls hang out, they can share ideas, learn new things; and support each other’s goals and can also have fun, relax, and laugh together.

When girls use pet names, it is usually seen in our society as going against cultural norms and gender roles in Nigeria, and some people believe that it is inappropriate for girls to be so casual and informal with each other which could lead to immoral behavior or suspicion of gay relationship.

Some Nigerians criticize female friendships based on several reasons, such as cultural values and personal beliefs which may not necessarily be genuine reasons. Some see pet names as a form of flattery or sugar-coating that should not be used for thesame gender, while others believe female friendships should not take precedence over family or domestic responsibilities. Additionally, some feel that female hangout may lead to gossip or sharing private information that should be kept within the family.

The use of pet names like “girlfriend” and “babygirl” and hangouts in female friendships likely originated in countries such as; the Philippines, and has been spread to other countries by social media. This has especially impacted younger generations, who have been influenced by the use of these terms in popular music and film.

Using pet names in countries like the Philippines can be a way to express affection and strengthen friendships. It can also be a way to show respect, appreciation, and admiration. Additionally, being called a pet name may make the recipient feel valued and special.

The trend seems to have spread largely through social media, particularly on platforms such as; Twitter, TikTok and Instagram that started gaining popularity in Nigeria in the early 2020s and has since spread to other countries in Africa; including Ghana, South Africa, Kenya among others.

It’s important to understand that female friendships are not a threat to traditional values or a sign of promiscuity. On the contrary, these friendships can be a positive force for good in women’s lives. While some people may be critical of this trend, it’s important to recognize that it’s not about replacing other relationships, but about providing a space for women to connect and support each other. By promoting understanding and acceptance, they can help to create a more inclusive and supportive society for all.

Some people may view female friendships with suspicion, it’s significant to consider the motivations behind this skepticism. Sometimes, this negativity is rooted in traditional gender roles and stereotypes that see women as inferior or less capable than men. And these friendships can even play an important role in women’s health and well-being. They can provide social support, reduce stress, and improve overall quality of life. Given these benefits, they should not criticize or stigmatize these relationships.
